When the dust settles after a new arrival parents will often begin searching for activities they can enjoy with their child. Baby and toddler groups can be found in most areas and offer a great way for parents to meet people in a similar situation, while children will benefit from the opportunity to interact with their peers in a safe and secure environment.
Groups Support Learning and Development
The Pre-School Learning Alliance recommends these type of groups saying: “Baby and toddler groups, also known as parent and toddler groups or stay and play sessions, create the opportunity for children to interact and form relationships with other children and adults. They can experience a range of materials and play activities to support their learning and development.”
Finding a Toddler Group
Toddler and baby groups often meet in church or community halls, so parents can check their local church or community newsletter for details and meeting times. Local libraries may also be able to supply details of groups meeting locally, while other parents and health visitors are also a great source of information on available activities in any area.
Joining a Play Group
The first visit to a play group can be daunting for new parents so it can be a good idea to arrange to go with a friend. If this is not possible parents should try and introduce themselves to others on arrival and ask another parent to show them round and explain about the group. Children make great ice-breakers, so even the shyest of new mums has an excuse to strike up a conversation.
Successful Toddler Group Supervision
Parents are responsible for their own children at baby and toddler groups so parents should ensure they can see their child at all times, however it is important that babies and toddlers are allowed to explore their environment and learn from it. Mothers and fathers should therefore maintain a constant presence while resisting the urge to intervene every few minutes – children will let their parents know when they need them.
The Right Baby or Toddler Group
While it is important to give a new group a chance, sometimes parents will find their first choice just does not suit them or their child. If this is the case, mums and dads should not be disheartened as there will often be an alternative group nearby. Families can shop around until they find the play group that best suits them. If there are no suitable groups in the area, parents might consider starting their own group.
Play Groups are Good for Children and Parents
While at first a play group setting might seem alien to both parents and children, they do offer great opportunities for socialising and development. Parents who find the right group and ensure their children are well supervised at all times will find that both they and their children will reap the rewards of their efforts.
